Toothbrush Care
For more information visit the ADA website.
How often do you clean your toothbrush?
 |
- Thoroughly rinse toothbrushes after brushing to remove any remaining toothpaste and debris. After each use, shake your toothbrush vigorously under tap water and store it in an upright position so that it can air out. Allow the toothbrush to air-dry until used again. You can also use a mouthwash, like Listerine, Baking Soda or Hydrogen Peroxide to clean your toothbrush.
Note: If you are considering using a dishwasher to clean your toothbrush, first check with the toothbrush manufacturer to make sure it can withstand the high temperatures.
- Do not routinely cover toothbrushes or store them in closed containers. A moist environment such as a closed container is more conducive to the growth of microorganisms than the open air.
- If more than one brush is stored in the same holder or area, keep the brushes separated to prevent cross-contamination, especially if someone has a cold or the flu.
- Do not share toothbrushes. Sharing a toothbrush could result in an exchange of body fluids and/or microorganisms between the users of the toothbrush, placing the individuals involved at an increased risk for infections. This practice could be a particular concern for persons with compromised immune systems or existing infectious diseases.
- For Electric Toothbrushes, remove the head and clean the base where the head connects..
|
How often do you replace your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head?

- The ADA recommends that toothbrushes be replaced approximately every 3–4 months or sooner if the bristles become frayed with use. Over time, bacteria can accumulate in the bristles of your toothbrush.
- Children's toothbrushes may need to be replaced more often.
- Replace toothbrushes after a cold, the flu, a mouth infection or a sore throat.
Germs hiding in the toothbrush bristles and may lead to reinfection.
- People with compromised immune systems or existing infectious diseases
may benefit by replacing their toothbrushes more frequently.
How can I protect my toothbrush when traveling?
- Store you toothbrush in a plastic toothbrush case. This will protect toothbrush bristles from becoming squashed or flattened in your suitcase.
- Air dry your toothbrush after brushing. Allowing your toothbrush to dry in the open air after brushing will minimize bacteria growth.
